Considering Major League Soccer

The list above includes only the traditional Big 4 sports leagues. So what about Major League Soccer?

When considering MLS, the list is not much different. California boasts three MLS teams, which would bring their professional sports team total to 19. Florida has one MLS team, with another expected to start play in 2020. New York has one MLS team that plays in-state, and one that plays home games in New Jersey. Texas currently has two MLS teams, with another expected to start play in 2021. Pennsylvania and Illinois both have one MLS team, and Ohio has two.

Traditionally, MLS has not been considered one of North America’s major sports leagues. However, times are changing. After the league began play in 1996, it struggled mightily. Today, however, the league is profitable and expanding. Given the growing popularity of soccer in the United States, the Big 4 sports teams might someday become the Big 5.
