The TEMPUR-Flex Elite mattress is the 3rd model in Tempurpedic’s 4 bed Flex line up. The Flex models combine innersprings & foam into a “hybrid” mattress. We’ve done the in-depth testing and analysis for you; and here are the results:
Comfort Scale Rating
The Flex Elite has a medium feel that’s acceptable to most people; we rate it 4.5 on our 10 point Comfort Scale (a 1 is hard, 10 is softest.)
Expert Video Review
Here’s our quick Flex Elite Video Review. It highlights the features, benefits and our impression.
Pros & Cons
- Medium feel is acceptable to most people
- Balance of contouring foam and innerspring support
- Minimal motion transfer
- Trusted brand with long track record
- Expensive at $3,499 for a queen size, and $4,199 for a king (mattress only)
- It may take a week to “break-in”, and the foam smell may take a few days to go away

Pressure Test Results
We’ve pressure tested the Flex Elite mattress with petite, average and large size people in both the side and back sleeping positions to see what kind of support and comfort you can expect. (Learn how we test.) The TEMPUR-Flex Elite was “Not Recommended” on 3 of the 6 tests seen below. To elaborate a bit, the side positions for average and petite sleepers had excessive pressure points that are uncomfortable and cause tossing and turning, reducing the quality of sleep. The average size back sleeper also had that problem as well, so we do “not recommend” those beds if you fit into those groups.
However, in the case of large people in either position, or petite back sleepers, the mattress did fine and we rated it “good”. The weight distribution was adequate and the mattress demonstrated support in the lower back and legs. These are not the tippy top results we sometimes see, but certainly good and therefore you can purchase with confidence. The Flex Elite mattress will provide the proper support and contouring for these sleepers.
The Main Flex Elite Features in Detail
A. EasyRefresh Top Cover
This is a zip-off removable cover that comes off for washing. A nice feature to help keep your mattress clean.
B. Smart Climate System
This is a two layer construction that combines breathable fibers on the top cover to wick moisture away and a Smart Climate treatment in the inner cover for cool comfort.
C. Comfort Layer
The Flex Elite mattress uses super soft TEMPUR-ES material to create the conforming top that you nestle into when lying down to sleep.
D. Response Layer
Tempur-Pedic includes their TEMPUR-Response foam to promote the springy feeling while also supporting and spreading your weight.
E. Support Layer
The pocketed coil springs give quick response like a traditional mattresses, and in this case, under the memory foam layer.
F. Base Layer
A final layer supports everything else.
Comfort Depth Video
We measured how far your hips and shoulders sink into the Flex Elite mattress with different body types.
The Flex Elite mattress has an industry standard 10 year warranty against factory defects.
More about Tempur-Pedic
Tempur-Pedic created the memory foam mattress category here in the U.S. Founded in 1992, they continually grew until they became a household name and large enough to buy the Sealy Mattress Company. They’re now a public company called Tempur-Sealy and sell mattresses worldwide.
There are 2 important points of differentiation vs other foam mattresses. First, Tempur-Pedic actually designs and manufactures their foam components and mattresses. This speaks to their degree of expertise (most foam mattress brands buy components from suppliers).
Secondly, Tempur-Pedic has always created premium products. As in any industry, there are companies that make cheaper priced, lower quality products, and those that make higher quality, higher priced products. Tempur-Pedic has always made higher quality mattresses using premium materials and manufacturing standards. The success of their mattresses, and long running reputation for quality, propelled their company to be the largest in the world.
