Giant Tree Taiga Biome
For the less-mountainous biome, with smaller trees and often covered in snow, see Taiga Biome.
A giant tree taiga biome (also known as a redwood forest or mega taiga before 1.13), is a variant of the taiga biome, but is similar to a jungle, with its massive trees and sometimes treacherous terrain.

The giant tree taiga is categorized under the “cold” biome category, generating only in areas with a temperature of .3. The giant tree taiga is a rare biome and does not generate as often as its taiga counterpart. Giant tree taigas are one of the more simplistic and abundant biomes. Giant tree taigas are filled with large spruce trees arranged in a 2×2 manner, creating an over-abundance of wood, only being rivaled to that of a jungle. However, unlike jungles, the layout of the giant tree taiga is flatter and contains fewer obstacles aside from those generated by terrain. Though abundant in wood and less cluttered than jungles, the terrain can still be rough, making travel tedious. Peaceful mobs will occasionally spawn here, as well as a seemingly large population of brown mushrooms. There is a lack of grass in this biome, and boulders can be found littered across the ground.
Due to it’s cold nature, snowy tundra biomes may spawn at the edge of Giant Tree taigas, along with Mountains, and jungle biomes (due to similarities with the giant tree taiga).

There are no npc villages in this biome despite existence of a taiga village (as these types generate only in normal taigas), but on some occasions a village may spread into this biome.
As with all biomes, excluding the mushroom island biome, it’s capable of naturally spawning hostile mobs. There are no exclusive mobs to the giant tree taiga (aside from the fox, found in all taiga variants), and peaceful mobs may occasionally spawn.
In general, the giant tree taiga is an extremely user-friendly biome, abundant with building materials, occasionally spawning in a hill variation. The majority of the ground is covered with podzol, a grass alternative. Grass patches can still generate inside the biome, allowing for peaceful mobs, as well as patches of coarse dirt, a variant of dirt incapable of growing into grass. Often, a player may find sparse boulders formed of mossy cobblestone, allowing for plentiful harvest of the otherwise rare material.

- Prior to update 1.13, giant tree taigas were called mega taigas, but were renamed to giant tree taigas.
- Podzol can only be found in giant Tree taiga biomes and bamboo forests. It can be obtained rather easily by planting 4 spruce saplings in a 2×2 fashion, in which the spruce tree will become massive and blossom a patch of podzol around it. Alternatively, a silk touch tool may be used on podzol to harvest it.
- Similarly, this biome is one of 3 that can generate coarse dirt, the others being shattered savannah and wooded badlands plateau, as well as some of their variants.
